Malta - Valletta - Lunch

 All that walking helps to create a appetite and well we found this little gem … the view say it all.

Great way to start lunch, some scallops with a cheeky cool bottle of Vermentino. 

I’m smelling grassy and herbaceous in the wine and well it turns out that this grape variety is similar to Sauvignon Blanc.


And slow cooked Octopus … Gosh it was sooooo tender and a very Maltese dish, so another ✅ed off our foods to have list!


Now this was a new ingredient!! “Konserva” which was so moreish, it was sweeter and more complex than a tomato paste from back home because it is made only with the tomato flesh (not seeds or skin) slow cooked and reduced and served in olive oil. (probably had a herb or two … but the waiter was not divulge the secret recipe)
Will be hunting this one down in Australia with our Maltese friends as it was sooooooo yummy. 


Pete in the other shirt from Guatemala, was so cool to wear in this climate BUT that Konserva stressed out my waiter who kept replacing my napkin!


Now a bit more about where we had lunch at Cockney’s
Our table was over the road from the original Cockney’s on a platform with view over the bay.



It was two openings in the castle wall from the early 1900’s and was where the fisherman used to come from the bay below for something to eat in the left roller shutter and something to drink on the right one.
And now it is encased in the timber facade that you see in the above picture protecting the old heritage and it was great to be able to go inside for a bit of a look too.


The red has been striped away back to the original timber from the 1900’s and now houses the kitchen.
