Did a food walking tour in Tallinn

to check out some of the local sights.

and of course taste some local foods.
The not so humble Potato Salad!
Now this may seem like a simple dish but I have to say it is the best potato salad that I have ever eaten. Big call when its just a potato salad! but the difference here is they have over 500 different varieties to choose from. Interesting point that their are about 5000 different varieties world wide and while in Australian we have so few.
This Nordic region is good at growing potato's and when it's a big part of your everyday diet it needs to be good. Back in Tamworth to date I have always had potato salads that have a more starchy flavour and a crumbly texture. Sure when in Tassy we have more firm varieties.
We normal cut our potatoes into bigger pieces and cook till the inside is cooked so when you make the potato salad we end up with a mushier style. Here and with a choice of those 500 varieties, they are able to use one of the many firm styles.
So here is the Nordic secret that I learned today ... cut your potatoes into small cubes say 10mm cook so still very firm, cool then make the salad.
Simple, but it had a great individual taste of all the ingredients.
They add cooked carrot cubes, cucumber, shallots, lemon juice, ham cubes, mayonnaise and sour cream as the dressing,

AND loads of dill. The dill here is grown in the soft Nordic climate so is strong in flavour and is sold mature in the markets with flowers and seeds to help with that intense flavour.

Helps when the markets have such a big variety of potatoes,
this is just a small section of this supermarket.
